Concerns continue to grow over the fitness of Phil Foden ahead of the start of the season after the Manchester midfielder was spotted wearing a protective boot on his right foot.
Foden missed the Euro 2020 final between England and Italy at Wembley Stadium on 11 July due to a foot injury he picked up in the days prior.
The club is reportedly ‘optimistic’ about Foden’s chances of being fit for the start of the season, but with just two weeks to go until City’s first game of the season in the Community Shield against Leicester City on 7 August, it’s still not clear whether he will be fit for the start of the Premier League campaign.
Foden was spotted still wearing a protective boot in his local barber shop in Stockport on Sunday as he took pictures during his time off following his international duty.
City are planning to run tests on the midfielder next week to see the extent of the damage as Foden prepares to return to the team.
The City player was seen walking on crutches following England’s penalty shootout defeat by Italy a fortnight ago.
Speaking about Foden’s injury at the time, England manager Gareth Southgate sounded optimistic.
“It’s very difficult. It’s not something that’s going to keep him out for a long time, but unfortunately he wasn’t able to run properly.
“It’s heartbreaking for him and a disappointment for us.”
With City already short on numbers in pre-season amidst a challenging preparation for the new season, Foden’s injury adds to the mounting challenges already facing Pep Guardiola this summer.
